If you are in Zurich (Switzerland) until the 5th December 2009, you can't miss RAN HWANG @ Gallery Kashya Hildebrand. RAN HWANG creates striking art works from common, mass-produced materials and objects, such as buttons, crystals, pins and threads. The defamiliarization and recontextualization of these everyday objects ask the viewer to engage in a new tactile visuality.

Inspired by Buddhist concepts, Her works invite the viewer to engage in multiple readings of emptiness and existence, of attempting to reach the state of enlightenment and fulfilment through the conscious emptying of one’s mind and spirit. Hwang hopes that the contemplation of her works evoke a feeling of meditative calm and introspection in the viewer, meditative experiences she herself had during the creation process.

RAN HWANG was born in 1960 in the Republic of Korea. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, she attended the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Chung Ang University in Seoul, Korea. The artist lives and works in New York.

Max Dworkin

"My work focuses on several different but closely related subjects and situations which all revolve around my fascination with the world around me. My work also touches on different aspects of my surroundings and experiences ranging from people involved in my life to events and strange scenarios I have encountered.

The process of photographing allows me to try and capture some of the feelings, interests and emotions that life leaves me with. I am interested in combining two very different elements in my images; very controlled technical skill (lighting, composition and focus) with uncontrolled elements (action, animals, strangers, danger, ect.) and I take an active role in my work.

Because my work revolves around my life it is constantly shifting and seems to spill over into different areas of photography; portraiture, documentary, action, still life, landscape and biographic. In some of my work I am interested in creating a narrative with my images giving the viewer a single image from a larger scenario leaving them with questions and forcing them to fill in the blanks about who, what, why, and how.

is intrigued by locations with extraordinary and strange solutions in their design, and recalls questions about the use of materials. This is how the artist presents his work: «I make photos of interiors, I film them, construct them, explore them in their materiality". He concentrates on looking for equity of time, value and sense of representation.

erased classic

Okay I know: carpets are boring...but wait a minute and let me present you the work of german designer JAN KATH! When I saw these pictures on todayandtomorrow this morning, I had immediately thought: so cool, a concrete's rug ;-) but it's not!

This collection entitled Erased Classic is based on classic patterns from Italian wall coverings and Indian saris. The carpets are produced by weavers at manufacturing sites in Kathmandu. But their final look is caused by acid, which makes the patterns fade and disappear. The customer cannot only define the color, materials, size, knot density, and design, but also the degree of erosion.

Are carpets still boring?

Esque Studio

+ Produced by MIKE CALL, BOONE SPEED and RUSS LOWE. Cameras: MIKE CALL and BOONE SPEED. Post Production: MIKE CALL. Score: DAVE MADDEN (Nonnon)

I love, love, love this video presenting the process of Portland glassblowers JUSTIN PARKER and ANDI KOVEL aka ESQUE who were most recently honored by Time magazine as one of the "Design 100," recognized as leaders in their production of hand-blown, modern glass products.

With a neat visual effect that makes the glass look hand-colored in an otherwise primarily black-and-white scene, filmmakers MIKE CALL and BOONE SPEED show the playfulness and intensity that goes into making their work.

Enjoy!

"Art should have an emotional-intellectual dimension. Art involves a game with the viewer, with conventions and with yourself."- by WILHELM SASNAL

Hauser & Wirth Zürich is presenting an exhibition of paintings on canvas and works on paper by Polish artist
WILHELM SASNAL.

He often borrows subjects from art history, 20th century propaganda, and photojournalism to developp through painting his own interpretation and understanding of imagery.

"I am a realist painter", he says, because everything he paints has its roots in particular situations, events, images and views, or is taken from books, the Internet, newspapers or the street. These images - physically "oil on canvas" - really take place in the deepest recesses of consciousness, between the visible and the visual memory.
